THE ART OF BRIDGE PHOTOGRAPHY

Bridges make up some of the most impressive architectural structures in the world. Often the identity of a city is tied to one of its bridges. Examples would be the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, or the Rainbow Bridge in La Conner. Bridges can make powerful images.

Vince Streano has been photographing bridges for some of the largest engineering and architectural companies in the United States for over twenty years. His bridge photography has appeared in publications throughout the world, and he has a reputation as an expert in the photography of bridges.

Vince will conduct a three part workshop on the art of bridge photography. The lecture portion of the workshop will begin at 9:30 AM on Saturday, March 20th, followed by a tour of three local bridges that afternoon. Participants will work on their assignments on their own during the following week. The workshop will wrap-up on the evening of March 31st with a critique.

During the lecture portion and discussion Vince will show a portfolio of his bridge images. Then participants will learn how to research a bridge using an actual bridge assignment from one of Vince’s clients. They will learn how to scout for vantage points before traveling to the bridge, and how to plan a shot list of subjects, including that one “hero” shot clients are always looking for.  They will also learn about booking a helicopter for aerials or a boat for shots from the water.  Vince will talk about lens selection, composition, best angles and lighting. The lecture will conclude with a discussion of the three bridges that participants will be photographing; the Twin Bridges, Rainbow Bridge, and Deception Pass Bridge.

After lunch, students will gather at the Twin Bridges. There Vince will demonstrate shooting angles and sight lines, interesting bridge features, lens selection and vantage points.  From the Twin Bridges, the class will move to the Rainbow Bridge, where we’ll have a similar discussion. We will conclude with the Deception Pass Bridge. Since the class will be meeting around the equinox, we’ll be able to shoot the bridge with the sun setting directly behind it, something that happens only twice a year, in March and September.

After the bridge tour, the class will have ten days to complete their bridge assignments before the critique on March 31st.

Bio/ Vince Streano

Vince Streano began photography at the age of eight when his parents gave him a Brownie Hawkeye Camera and told him to go outside and take some pictures to keep him occupied after school. He has been taking pictures ever since.

Vince snared his first photography job working part time for the local newspaper while a sophomore in high school. He worked part time photography jobs throughout the rest of high school days and during his college years, graduating from San Jose State University with a degree in journalism and photography.

After graduation in 1968, Vince landed a job as a staff photographer with the Los Angeles Times. During his 5 ½ years at the newspaper, he images and photo essays were won many awards and were featured throughout the newspaper.

In 1973 Vince left the Times to begin his freelancing career, working for editorial publications. Over the next fifteen years Vince completed assignments for many national magazines including Smithsonian, Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, People, Time, and the London Observer.

In 1976 Vince was awarded a contract by Doubleday to travel around the world photographing children for a multi-media project called “Children of the World”. The images he collected during his seven month trip were used to produce a series of twelve filmstrips to teach children about different world cultures.

In 1980 Vince was elected President of his local ASMP chapter in Southern California. The following year he was elected to the national board of directors. He served on the that board for thirteen years, and as President of the association in 1991 and 1992.

Since moving to Anacortes in 1989, Vince has used his photo-journalistic skills in photographing assignments for the engineering/construction industry. His assignments take him throughout the country photographing bridges, transportation systems, airports, and other structures designed by his clients.

In addition to his photography, Vince is experienced in presenting seminars. Vince, along with his wife Carol Havens, led a number of seminars at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, and at Photo Expo in New York. Vince also presented seminars on various subjects for many of the ASMP chapters across the country.
